Albert was born in Darlington, County Durham and worked as a railway goods porter for the North Eastern Railway at Blyth (Newcastle upon Tyne) before moving to Alston (Cumbria) to work on the Alston to Haltwhistle (Northumberland) branch line as a station master. He was married to Anne Fearon and the couple had two children. Albert was 31 when he was killed.
