Fred was awarded the Military Medal for 'Bravery in the Field'. The citation in the Commonwealth Gazette No. 174 Date: 11 October 1917 read: 'During progress of attack on Noreuil 2nd April, 1917 it was essential to obtain touch between the left of Line occupied by 52nd Battalion and the Right 50th Battalion, regarding the whereabouts of which considerable doubt existed. This Lance Corporal volunteered for the work, and after crossing open country under shell, rifle and machine gun fire (during which he located an enemy machine gun position) he found the right of the 50th Battalion, and so enabled a dangerous gap in the line to be closed.'
