PTE CHARLES SCHOFIELD, Manchester Regiment, killed in France, was the son of Mr and Mrs Chas Schofield, “Fox and Grapes” Inn, Pitt St, Macclesfield. Twenty-four years of age, Pte Schofield was mobilised with the Earl of Chester’s Yeomanry. After training for some time he was released for work on munitions, during which time his regiment was drafted to Egypt. He was later attached to the 3rd line of the Cheshire Yeomanry and on going to France was posted to the Manchesters. Being time expired he spent a month’s leave in March 1917 and returning to his unit was drafted to Italy, and went to France about two months ago. Pte Schofield was educated at London Road Branch (St George’s) School and when war broke out he had almost completed his apprenticeship under Mr M H Watts, Catherine Street.
