known 19th January 1917

Week ending 19th January 1917 LETTER FROM THE FRONT – I am delighted to get two letters from the “boys.” Here is an interesting one: Dear “Tatler” – Will you kindly allow me a line in the Desborough Notes re the ten brave lads who came out here about a month ago. I was sorry to see them called shirkers and I think if you could find out who your correspondent was, you would find him still in Desborough shirking his duty. I cannot imagine a Desborough lad who has been out here two years calling a comrade from his own town a shirker. He would sooner rush up to him and clasp his hand and wish him the best of luck. It is my greatest regret to know there are no Desborough lads in the division I am attached to. Well, Mr “Tatler”, I wish every Desborough lad, whether he’s been out here two years or two weeks, or is still in dear old “Blighty” training, a happy New Year. May they have the best of luck and a safe return.
