Ashton Soldier Killed While Serving with Canadians

Mrs William Thorpe, who is at present residing with her mother at 12 Wharf Street, Dukinfield, has received official news that her husband, Pte William Thorpe, of the 27th Canadians, was killed in action on May 3rd by shell fire. Private Thorpe formerly resided at 31 Glebe Street, Ashton, but five years ago left Ashton, along with his wife, to take up his residence in Canada. For four years he worked at a brick making manufactory at Redcliffe, Alberta, and afterwards found employment on farm work. He joined the Canadian forces in Winnipeg on March 2nd 1916, and his wife, who is a Dukinfield young lady, came back to England. He paid a visit to his relatives in November last, and in the following month was drafted out to France. Previous to emigrating he worked at Messrs Jones Sewing Machine Works, as a moulder. He leaves a widow and one child five and a half years of age. Mrs Thorpe has two brothers in the army. Private Frank Whittaker, of the King's Liverpool Regiment, aged 22, and Private Fred Whittaker who is in the R.A.M.C and is 19 years of age.
