Joseph enlisted into the Durham Light Infantry on 30 July 1906 Some Facts Joseph Furness, 19yrs 9mths, Shildon, British subject, Miner, Unmarried, Not living with parents. Medical 7 Aug 1906 Height 5ft 41/8 inches Weight 132lbs Girth when fully expanded 38 inches Range of Expansion 3 inches Complxion Fresh Eyes Grey Hair Auburn Church of England Distinguishing Marks Pit scars on back and scar acroos right elbow Seems Joseph was a bit of a devil as a corporal in Colchester and was up on charges and severly repremanded for instances like being in pssession of a pair of tweed trousers bel,nging to another soldier, playing cards in Barracks with private soldiers and neglect of duty when in charge of the dining hall but he must have been a good soldier as he was promoted to the ranks of Company Sergeant Major. Joseph didn't die in battle, he died from rheumatic fever and pneumonia contracted in France.
