Another of the Brave Camerons of Watten Falls

Another of the Brave Camerons of Watten Falls

From an article published in the Northern Ensign, issue dated 1 May 1917: It is with feelings of sincere regret that we have to record another break through warfare in the family of Mr Donald Cameron, Schoolhouse, Gersa, Watten. Recently Mrs Donald Cameron, Brims Buildings, Castletown, received intimation that her husband, Lance-Corpl. Donald Cameron, Seaforths, had fallen in battle on Monday, 9th April last. In civilian life Lance-Corpl. Cameron was a farm-servant, and before his enlistment in the R.D.C. in January, 1915, he was employed with Mr MacAdam at the Mills, Watten. Shortly after her husband’s enlistment Mrs Cameron went to reside in Castletown. Her father is Mr Henry Brotchie, Kirkstyle, Dunnet. The captain of the company to which the late Lance-Corpl. was attached sent a letter to Mrs Cameron stating that he had fallen on Monday, the 9th. He also stated that the late Lance-Corpl. was “a grand type of north-country soldier and a general favourite. He will be missed both by officers and men. Please accept my deepest sympathy in your great bereavement.” Pte. John Cameron, another of the family, was killed in battle on 3rd July, 1916. Another brother, Pte. David Cameron was so severely wounded in the right hand that he was sent back to Canada until he should recover from his wound. Pte. George Cameron, a fourth brother, is in France meantime. We feel sure that the community extend their very sincere sympathy to the young widow, to Mr Cameron, sen., and to all who are bereaved by the death of such a gallant soldier.
