9th November 1914 - 5th July 1915

He enlisted, at the age of 19, in November 1914, along with a number of friends from the CWS Soap Works, including his brother-in-law to be, Arthur Clark. While on leave from training he married Louie Clark (aged 20) on 22nd June 1915 at Irlam Parish Church, just before he departed for Gallipoli. His occupation on the marriage certificate is listed as soldier. At first, while Charles was on active service, his wife lived with her parents at 5 Dean Road, Cadishead.
