SUVLA BAY, GALLIPOLI

6th July 1915 - 15th December 1915

The 11th Battalion sailed from Keyham Dockyard, Devonport on 7th July 1915 on His Majesty’s Transport Ascania. Charles sent the following postcard: ‘Dear Mother & Father & All, just a line to let you know we have arrived on the boat safely and are sailing tonight Tuesday. Hope you are all in the best of health as I am at present, please remember to all. Robert & Tommy wishes to be remembered to our Oliver and you can write back as they will follow us on. So now I will close. From your loving son Charlie.’ The transport reached Malta on 15th July, and set sail the same night, for Alexandria, arriving on 18th. On the evening of 20th July the transport left for Mudros Bay in Lemnos, arriving 3 days later. The battalion landed at Suvla Bay on 6th August 1915, where they took part in heavy fighting in the foothills surrounding the bay. His brother-in-law, Arthur Clark, was killed on 6th August. Charles was wounded in action while serving in Gallipoli.
