3RD BATTALION

3RD BATTALION

January 1916 - July 1917

After recovering from the wounds he received at Gallipoli Charles was posted to the 3rd Battalion, Manchester Regiment. The 3rd Battalion was part of the Humber Garrison based at Cleethorpes which was used to help wounded or sick soldiers to return to fitness. During this time Charles and his wife moved to Liverpool Road, Cadishead, probably to coincide with the birth of their son, also named Charles (born on 28th April 1917). He rejoined the 11th Battalion in France sometime in July 1917 and returned to active service in time for the Battle of Passchendaele. He sent a postcard dated 10th July 1917 to his sister, Millicent, who was serving as a nurse in Colwyn Bay ‘Dear Millie, we have arrived at London and just had supper, it is a weary journey up to now. I wasn’t able to get home and I haven’t seen Baby yet. It’s hard work but I won’t be away long. Give my regards to Mrs Haworth and All. Love from Charlie.’ It is unlikely that he ever saw his son.
