Early life of George Alfred Axon

Early life of George Alfred Axon

George was the first child born to George Axon (a private in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment) and Ellen Axon (nee Bradford). When George Axon Senior was serving in Africa during the Boer War, young George Alfred lived in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire with his mother and two younger siblings (Ellen Sophia Axon born in December 1897 and Arthur Roberts Pretoria Axon born in June 1900), together his maternal grandparents. After his grandfather's death in 1901 the family moved to Nuneaton, the home of his paternal grandparents. Unfortunately, George's mother, Ellen, died of enteric fever in November 1902. George Senior returned home and wrote to the Army asking for his children to be taken into an Army school. Although George Axon Senior re-married in Devonport in 1904 (to Bessie Goodman), his three children were subsequently sent off to Army schools - George Alfred to The Duke of York School, Ellen Sophia to the Soldiers' Daughters' School and Arthur to The Royal Hibernian School in Dublin.
