From writings of Pte William C Manley, stretcher bearer DCLI “I was standing by his side & brought him in when sniper shot him thro stomach “fatally”. George Branch & I brought in Carus Wilson & Lt Ross (Plymouth), went with him with our stretcher to ambulance just after the Lt Col was wounded. 2nd Lieut L C Coombe (Elsie) was killed by the same sniper as shot the Col; shot thro the forehead. Col shot in stomach”
