Having been hospitalised during the Gallipoli campaign, in Egypt. Lieutenant Colonel Henry Backhouse sailed from Alexandria, to rejoin his regiment, who had been sent to India. He sailed on the S. S. Persia, a civilian ship which carried troops as well as civilians. This was struck by a torpedo from a German U boat, on 30th December 1915, south of the island of Crete. Henry Backhouse was one of 334 people who were drowned
