Charles Henry Ward, Senior, was born on 19 January 1859 in Southwark, London, Surrey, son of James William Ward and Charlotte Vale. He was baptised at St. Saviour, Southwark, on 13 February 1859. In 1861 the family were still in Southwark, but by 1871 they had moved to Tottenham, Middlesex. On 14 October 1883, Charles married Olive (also known as Olivia) Schofield, at All Hallows, Tottenham. Their marriage registration has been recorded incorrectly as Charles appears under the ref. 3a, 570, whereas Olive appears under ref. 3a, 370, hence causing some confusion for researchers! Charles and Olive had 8 known children, including son Charles Henry. Although Charles, Junior's, Navy record gives his birthdate as 28 April 1890, the only birth registration found is 1889 Jun. Edmonton 3a, 359 - Charles Henry Ward, so perhaps he was a year older than recorded. Sadly Charles died at sea under tragic circumstances. His Navy record tells us that while aboard ship:.... "The deceased apparently slipped whilst on the forecastle, and whilst falling struck his head in some manner, so as to lose consciousness momentarily. That whilst in this state, the deceased drifted past the ship and was drowned before aid could reach him."
