1st Battalion Somerset Light Infantry. (11th Infantry Brigade 4th Division). Killed in action 4th October 1917 during the Battle of Broodseinde, 5th in the series of the 3rd Battles of Ypres over the period 31st July November 10th, 1917. Popularly known as the British Passchendaele offensive. Western Gazette 16th November 1917: The many friends of Mrs Wall, of 37 Victoria Road, will learn with deep regret that her son Lance Corporal W.J. Lee has been missing since the 4th October 1917, and is presumed to have been killed in action in the great attack on that date. He has been in France since the beginning of the war with the Somersets. Walter John Lee was 35. “It is with deep regret that I have to inform you that your husband is missing etc . He was an excellent soldier and is greatly missed in the company Cement House Cemetery, Langemarck, Ypres, West Flanders, Belgium. Plot IV. Row A. Grave 23.
