Corporal Albert Edward Riley

Albert Edward Riley 1889 -25 October 1918 Albert Edward Riley was born in Chesterton, Staffordshire, in 1889 to Eliza and Albert Riley. His father was a farmer. Sister: Florence Riley was born 1891 and brother Clarence Riley in 1893. Beatrice was born in 1895 and Charles was born 1899. Sister Elizabeth Riley was born in 1903 and brother Colin in 1905. They all lived at Partridge's Nest Farm, Spring Wood, Chesterton, Staffordshire. In 1901 they had a servant to help out caring for the children. Albert worked on the family farm before he enlisted in the army after conscription. In 1915 Albert married Helenor Smart in Chesterton and they lived in Mona Terrace Alsager. Albert was posted to the second battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and was Acting Corporal in ‘C’ Company, service number 14783. Albert served in France and was killed in action on 25th October 1918. He was buried at QUIETISTE MILITARY CEMETERY, LE CATEAU in grave ‘C 10.’ The Commonwealth War grave states Albert was ‘Husband of Mrs. H. Riley, of Mona Terrace, Alsager, Cheshire. Native of Chesterton.’ Albert was posthumously awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. On March 11th 1919 Albert was awarded posthumously the Military Medal for bravery in the field. After her husband’s death Helenor moved to Gawsworth, Cheshire, where she died in 1962. On her grave and in early census her name is spelt 'Eleanor.' She never remarried. Her husband is commemorated on Helenor’s grave in St James, churchyard, Gawsworth.
