Killed in Action

known 30th October 1914

We regret to record the death of Captain Francis Percy Cambell Pemberton, of 2nd Life Guards, killed in action near Roulers. Captain Pemberton, who was 29 years of age, was the only son of Canon and Mrs Pemberton, of Trumpington Hall, to whom the sad news was conveyed on Friday in a telegram form the War Office. Telephone inquiries at hte War Office elicited the reply that hte war Office had not received any details. Captain Pemberton was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and entered the Army in 1907. In May, 1912, he was seconded from his regiment in order to take up the duties of cavalry instructor to the Oxford and Cambridge Officers' Training Corps. The appointment would not have expired until March next, but on the declaration of war he was recalled to his regiment. He received his captaincy in August. He was popular alike amongst the officers and men of his regiment, and at Oxford and Cambridge. He was a keen sportsman, a splendid shot, and a bold huntsman, and an excellent cricketer, and during this war, he proved that he was a gallant soldier. He was married on the 30th April 1912, to Miss Winifred Mary Worsley, eldest daughter of Sir William Worsley, Bart. and Lady Worsley, of Howingham Hall, Yorkshire. Like every other member of his family, Captain Pemberton was greatly beloved in Trumpington for his kindness and readiness to befriend those in trouble and distress. The utmost sympathy will go out ot Canon and Mrs Pemberton, and to the widow in their great bereavement.
