There is a letter on Don Humberston's records, addressed in reply to one from Don's father, Alfred, dated 31 October 1914. It is from the HQ base of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. It reads:- Mr A Humberston Sir Reference your enquiry (1) I regret to have to inform you that your son No 5832 C.S.M. Don Humberston was killed in action between 13 and 18 September. (2) I cannot trace your son Edmund Humberston. Can you give his regimental number please? (3) Arthur Edward Humberston was discharged to pension as Q.M.S. [Quartermaster Serjeant] on 10/10/13. [unreadable signature] Preston [Lancashire] 3/11/14
