On 23 November 1917, James was shot down by Manfred Von Richthofen. He was the Red Baron's 62nd victim. His plane crashed in no-man's land and he was seriously injured. He was rescued by another downed flyer - Henry Thornbury Fox Russell; Fox Russell extricated him from the wreckage and got him back to safety despite being under heavy fire.
