William's death

William's death

William was a small man of 5ft 2 inches and aged 22 years 8 months when he enlisted. He had a scar on his breast. As a private in the 2n d Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders he took part in the battle of Scarpe (commenced 9t h April 1917). Some eight days into the battle, while alone, he took his life. His father and siblings were informed that he had died of his wounds. His "dead man's penny" would probably be given to his father but sadly its location, like William's grave, is not known. He is remembered on Bay 9 of the Arras Memorial.
