Letter from Colonel Peake

Letter from Colonel Peake

known 26th January 1916

“I very much regret to have to inform you that your son, Private Walter Petford, of this battalion, died in hospital on the 25th January from intestinal stoppage. He was only taken ill on the 24th, and must have died almost immediately he reached hospital. He was buried in the local cemetery at____ the same day. I very sincerely sympathise with you in your loss. He was such a fine young fellow, and a good soldier, and is a great loss to the battalion. It may interest you to know that only a few days before he was selected to form part of the battalion guard when the billets were inspected by General Sir Douglas Haig, the Commander-in-Chief in France, who remarked on the fine physique and turn out of our guard.”
