Memorial in Coddington All Saints' Church,Coddington, Herefordshire

The Coddington war memorial indicates that Edward was awarded the Military Cross, which was instituted in December 1914 as a reward for gallantry for officers of the rank of Captain or below, and for Warrant Officers. His campaign medals included the 1915 Star. He was born at Evesham in about 1877, the son of the Rev Frederick Whitmore Holland, Vicar and later Rural Dean of Evesham. After his father’s death in Switzerland in August 1881, Edward and his sister Julia and mother, Elinor Traherne Holland (nee Martin) moved to Brand Lodge, Old Colwall (close to Coddington). Edward apparently never married. He fought on the Somme and was killed in action on 13 September 1916. He would have been about 29 years old.
