The 3rd Salford Pals Battalion departed from Folkstone for their passage to Boulogne on the 22nd of November 1915. An uncommonly dank bout of weather had already gripped this part of north eastern France. Not that the men were at all well equipped to face the rigors of winter. On arrival at Boulogne they had been relieved of one of everything. It was the traditional way of building up stores and left Salford 'sodgers' with no spare clothing save socks, underwear and comforts which the Welfare Committees provided from home.
