Charles Buckley was born in the parish of St John, Preston, Lancashire, in 1887, the fourth son of Jane Elizabeth Buckley, nee Selkirk. Jane Buckley had 9 children, 4 of whom died in infancy, and 2 of her sons were killed in the First World War - Charles and John. John Buckley served with the Border Regiment using the name Thomas Bennett, regimental number 7964.
