Jane Selkirk was born in Winstanley in 1849, 2nd daughter of John and Mary Selkirk. John Selkirk came from a family of farmers in Beckermet Cumberland who can trace their farming roots back to the 1700’s. In 1845, Jane’s father John had married Mary Hartley in St Bridget, Beckermet, and soon afterwards they moved to Winstanley Lane, Billinge, where John worked as a farm bailiff. Their first daughter Susannah was born there in 1847, and Jane was born in 1849. They went on to have 2 sons, Robert and William. John worked as a farm bailiff until in 1861, at the age of 44, he gave his occupation as overlooker - colliery. By the time he was 64, he was working as a carter at a colliery, an occupation he continued into his 70’s. In 1871, Jane Selkirk, aged 22, was working as a domestic servant at Ince Hall Inn, Warrington Road Wigan, for James Battersby, licensed victualler, his wife Ellen and their children Henry aged 11 and Martha aged 9. Two years later, Jane was living in Preston and had a family of her own. According to the baptism record at St Thomas’ Church Preston, she was married to William Buckley, cabinet maker, of 19 Mount Street. Their son Thomas was baptised there on 14th August 1873. In 1876, Jane had a daughter, Margaret, who died in 1877. Another daughter, also Margaret, was born in 1879, but she died in 1880.
