Pvt Albert Edward Bettley P/O 1048(S) 1st Royal Marine Light Infantry. Portsmouth Division Short Service. Born in Cudworth to Richard and Agnes 15th Mar 1898. The 1901 Census shows the family living at 37 Monckton Row. The 1911 Census puts them on Midland Road, Royston with Albert as a 'Screen boy colly surface' worker aged 13. He enlists with the RMLI on 17th Aug 1915, discovered to be under age and kept on at the base until 19 years of age, where he states he's living with his mother at 16 Monckton Row and working as a pit pony driver. He is described as 5' 7" with brown hair and eyes. KIA by machine gun fire at Gavrelle 28th April 1917. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. Bay 1.
