Ambrose Langan

Ambrose Langan

Born in Windy Arbour Dublin in 1871 to Ambrose snr and Bridget Purcell. He had nine siblings. In 1897 he married Annie Byrne of Whitehall Rathfarnham and they had two daughters-Elizabeth (my grandmother) and Bridget. In 1901 the Langans were listed as farmers in Whitehall. Unfortunately Annie died in 1905 aged 32. Both children went to live with relatives in Co. Kildare. Ambrose went to Scotland and from there to Australia (Aug 1911) where he worked as a platelayer on the railway. In Nov 1915, while working at the Bundamba Railway crossing outside Brisane, he downed tools and joined the Dungarees. He ended up on the Western Front via Sydney, Alexandria and Marseilles. He died at Pozieres on 5 Aug 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. He has no grave but is remembered on the Bretonneux Villers Memorial. Sadly he died having not seen his daughters for 10 years.
