known 27th May 1918
Copy of R.S.M. Frazier's letter. All that I can state regarding Major Cartland during the Operations on the Aisne May 27th 1918 are. Roughly at about 5am the Boche had reached our lines & had practically captured our HdQrs. I was in a dug out with several more men at the time the Major & Capt Pratt had moved away to give some orders this was the real last time I saw them but on getting away from Headquarters * I saw an officer being led away wounded when I heard several of them say there goes the Major * Heavy shelling was going on at the time, when we withdrew, which made it very difficult to observe anything. This is really all I can state after this I never saw either of them again. I must say that seeing nothing has been sent through the Red Cross that he must have been caught in the Barrage of which I could have very little hope for him. E.W.F.
