As S.L Lake lived in Paris and was a fluent French speaker his language skills were most useful when he joined the 6th Wiltshire Regiment. He was employed as a despatch rider and could translate items when required. Later as a Sergeant in the Royal Fusiliers he was involved in intelligence work because of his knowledge of France and the language. (His Service Card has the words 'intelligence' on it. Before the second world war he provided intelligence to Britain before he as forced to escape in June 1940. He boarded the last cargo ship out of Bordeaux. He then worked in munitions in Britain at Radway Way Green, Alsager during WW2.
