The Battle for Glatz Redoubt and Montauban, 1st of July 1916.

The Battle for Glatz Redoubt and Montauban, 1st of July 1916.

As part of the 21st Brigade, the 4th City Battalion, had been ready for many hours in the front line, their attack timed to go in at zero hour. For the 19th Manchester's objective was the north face of Glatz Redoubt. At 7.30 am the men went over the top, may smoking a 'woody'. The 4th City Battalion were led by "C" Company on the left and "A" Company on the right. In support were "B" Comp and "D" Company in reserve. In the front line trenches protecting Montauban the artillery preparation had been devastating. As the 4th City Battalion men poured forward dozens of Germans were running through us towards our lines with their hands up. Those who stayed in their trenches were overwhelmed the 4th City Battalion men moved confidently towards Glatz Redoubt. Nevertheless by 8.26 am the 19th Manchester's began to enter Glatz Redoubt and gained their objective. En route the battalion had captured two machine guns, three trench mortars and many prisoners. The conditions for successful attack on Montauban itself had been laid. Casualties had been, in the context of other battalion's experienced this day, relatively light, forty men and one officer killed, eleven men and one officer missing as well as one officer and one hundred and thirty six men wounded.
