"Just behind the firing line were a series of caves used by the Battalion as support and rest area. Around 7.30 am 2 shells landed at the cave being used by Headquarters, buried alive its occupants - Captains Miers, A.G. Cameron, Lieutenants N.C.G. Cameron, Meiklejohn, Crocket and 24 other ranks killed. Only 4 men survived. Several rescue attempts wee made, but shelling prevented the removal of bodies from the cave for many days.
