A soldiers pocket book

19th August 2016

Lionel's notebook was returned to his mother after he died. One entry made on 15 July 1915 only which describes going into the wood near Albert that day and only 55 of the company got back. Also contains a letter from his stepfather and a girl neighbour saying she will write to him as a friend. We had always assumed the hole was caused by a bullet but search of the regimental war diary for 1 August 1915 describe the regiment being at rest that day in the woods when a shell landed and killed 10. On the 100th anniversary of Lionel's death his great nephew visited his grave in Becourt cemetery to pay his respects. He took the book and placed it on top of the headstone. Pictures will be added.
