The Life of Thomas Arthur Bartram as I know it.

The Life of Thomas Arthur Bartram as I know it.

Thomas was my Great Uncle being the younger brother of my maternal Grandmother. He was born 18 Dec 1881 to Thomas Bartram and his wife Elizabeth. He lived the first 2 years of his life in Kimbolton, Huntingdonshire where his father was an agricultural labourer working on the estate of Kimbolton Castle. They were living in another nearby village Great Staughton for several years from 1883. By the 1901 Census he had moved to Northamptonshire which shows him working as a Railway Engine Cleaner. Between 1901 and 1911 he had moved to Sheffield where his 2 elder brothers now lived, signed up to the 1st Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment and was serving as a Corporal in India by 1911. At the end of 1911 he married Ada Goy on 1st Dec 1911. The 1st Battalion return to England 23 Dec 1914. At the moment I am not sure if/where he was serving during WW1 as I cannot find a WW1 Medal Card. There is a Thomas Bartram serving as a Sgt but has a different Reg Number. By 1921 he had been promoted to Company Sergeant Major. On 17 Jul 1921 he was sadly involved in a fatal accident. He had been to a function at Wath and was returning on a cycle from which he was thrown. He lost consciousness and so was transferred to a taxi and told he was being taken home when he recovered. The taxi then overturned and Thomas was thrown out and was trapped by his head. He was dead when released and his death was due to a fracture at the base of the skull. The Coroner returned a verdict of Accidental Death. Dying at the age of 39. He left a wife and 2 daughters.
