Hugh Dempster's army record shows his brother, William, as his Next of Kin. Hugh and William must have enlisted in the Royal Engineers at the same time because their service numbers are 64563 and 64562. When Hugh died, a telegram was first sent to William at an address in Ireland but it was returned because he was serving in France. By the time the message was forwarded to William he had also died. There is a note on Hugh's army file to say that his medals should be retained by the War Office as there was no Next of Kin. William's service record gives Hugh as NOK but later details another brother, George, who served with the Royal Irish Rifles were added.
