Loss of cricketing friends: E.J. Tiger Smith describing Percy Jeeves.

1918

Young Percy Jeeves was killed in the Somme, a tragedy because poor Percy wasn't the fighting type. He was a lovely gentle lad with a permanent smile on his face. . . . .... Percy could really hit the ball. He was about 5ft 7in tall and his arms and body were together when he played the shot. I can see one of his biggest hits now I was in the dressing room and watched it soar clean out of the ground and land across the road. Percy would have been a great all-rounder for England if he'd lived.
