Roystone Soldier's Sacrifice

Roystone Soldier's Sacrifice

known 22nd September 1917

Pte. G.E. Pigden, of Royston, recently killed in France, enlisted in January, 1915, and during the last year was wounded twice. Previous to joining the colours he worked at the New Monckton Collieries. His brother has received the following letter: "I very much have to regret to inform you of the death of your brother, who died from the effects of a wound which he recieved from a large calibre shell on August 18th. Pigden was hit in the side and died very shortly afterwards. He did not seem in pain and seemed quite happy. I may add how much I regret his loss as in the trenches he was always fearless and ready to do his job. Pigden was buried near the trenches, the exact spot being marked, and the padre made a journey up to read the offices over the grave. His grave is marked with a cross with his name, and it is registered. His small personal effects will be forwarded to you. Yours in sympathy, Percy High, Capt., B. Cn, 9th E.S.R."
