Maurice Francis Reid Mullaly Made More Than One Attempt to Enlist

known 10th January 1916

Maurice Francis Reid Mullaly made more than one attempt to enlist. His first endeavour was on 10 January 1916 in Casula, Sydney, New South Wales. And he was discharged on 2 June 1916 as being medically unfit for active service. He had failed the visual acuity test. The analysis of his eyesight problem concluded ".... is suffering from diminished acuity of vision as the result of [optic?] nerve lesions". What appears to be a note from a follow-up second opinion adds: "He gives a history of defective vision from many years past and it is possible that this problem is stationary..... but it is just as likely that there is active trouble....". At his second and successful attempt to enlist, Maurice answered the question on whether he had ever been rejected as unfit for service with HM forces with: "Yes (eyesight)".
