Jack George Deakin was born in 1897 in Steep, Petersfield, Hampshire, the son of John George (b.1866) a Groom Domestic and Ellen (b.1867) He was Baptised on the 6th June 1897 in Steep, Hampshire. His siblings were, Charles J b.1896, Albert Edward b.1901 and Kathleen Maud b.1904. The 1911 Census confirmed the family lived at 11 Victor Terrace, Washington Rd, Worcester Park. It also confirmed that one child had previously died. Jack’s Service Records confirm he enlisted in Kingston on the 25th March 1915. He was 5’10.5’’ tall and weighed 148lbs. He was described as a Butcher. He was disciplined on the 7th October 1915 for laughing and talking on parade whilst marching on attention. The records go on to say that he was hospitalised, for 36 days, on the 3rd October 1916. He was transferred back to England by hospital ship to the Royal Herbert Hospital Woolwich, having received a gun shot wound to his right thigh. However, the records, of which there are quite a few documents, show quite a bit of confusion. It appears to mix Jack’s records with a J A Deakin 22806 of the same regiment. One document goes on to state that J G Deakin was not wounded after all and that J A Deakin was the wounded soldier. These service records confirm that the family address was now 2 Craven Cottages, Cheam Common Rd, Worcester Park.
