Herbert Victor Golden was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1894, the son of William (b.1861) a Carpenter and Hannah (b.1865) His siblings were, Charles b.1889, Lydia b.1890, Arthur Wilfred b.1892, Hilda b.1897, Bertha b.1899, Henry b.1901 and Pheobe b.1903. The 1911 Census confirmed the family lived at 9 Drayton Villas, Longfellow Rd, Worcester Park. His service records confirm he enlisted on the 22nd October 1815 in Kingston, Ontario and joined the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force. It states that he was 5’3’’ tall, had blue eyes and dark hair. He was a Clerk by trade and it confirmed his father William Silas Golden lived at 23 Longfellow Rd, Worcester Park. It quotes his date of birth as August 1st 1895, however this differs from the records which confirm the year as 1894. Herbert was awarded the Military Medal, as was his brother Arthur Wilfred who also received the DCM. Arthur was also killed in action.
