Impressive Memorial Service at Trumpington

known 6th November 1914

From the Cambridge Chronicle 6 Nov 1914 The Late Capt. Pemberton Impressive Memorial Service at Trumpington “Faithful Unto Death” How widespread is the sympathy extended to Canon and Mrs Pemberton, of Trumpington Hall, in the loss of their only son, Capt. F. P. C. Pemberton, 2nd Life Guards, who was killed in action near Roulers on October 19th, and with the gallant officer’s widow, was manifest on Wednesday, when a large congregation, representative of Town, University and County, attended a memorial service held in the the church of St Mary and St Michael, Trumpington. Beloved by all who knew him, honoured and respected by the whole district, Capt. Pemberton’s memory will long be cherished, especially at Trumpington, where by his charming personality and his many sterling qualities he won the respect, esteem and admiration of all. Wednesday’s memorial service was a most impressive one, and will never be forgotten by those present. The chancel of the church was adorned by white chrysanthemums and ferns, whilst a cross of similar flowers, which hung from the chancel rails, bore the inscription: “With most loving sympathy.” It was from Mrs E. Bird Foster and Miss Saumarez Smith, of Hurstpierpoint. Outside the church a party of non-commissioned officers and men of the 1st Reserve Battalion of the Cambridgeshire Regiment, under Captain A. H. B. Chaplin and Lieut. R. T. Assheton, lined the approaches, whilst during the services they stood on either side of the centre aisle. Four members of the 2nd Life Guards (Windsor) represented the famous regiment in which Capt. Pemberton served. Dr Alan Gray (organist at Trinity College) presided at the organ, and as the congregation assembled played Bach’s Choral Preludes. A very impressive address was given by the Master of Trinity, at which college the late Capt. Pemberton was educated. The mourners were met at the church doors by the robed clergy, and as they proceeded to their seats the hymn “Let saints on earth in concert sing” was sung. Following the usual Psalms, Dr Butler read the Lesson. “Lead kindly light” was then sung, the concluding portion of the service was taken by Dr Bury, and prior to the Master of Trinity giving his address the beautiful hymn “Abide with me” was sympathetically rendered by the congregation.
