Battle of Le Cateau

Battle of Le Cateau

9th October 1918 - 10th October 1918

From letter home 14/9/18 by Captain William McKnight Docharty 18th King's Liverpool regiment: "How different this battle was: each Bn went miles with lots of prisoners. I never saw so many dead Bosche before. I was hors de combat before the fun began, but I gather the 18th took Le Cateau on the 10th with the Connaughts, and poor Mr Sanders was killed there." I have 4 heartrending letters from his mother Alice to my grandmother, one commiserating as my father nearly died from his wound 2 weeks later. (His heart stopped, so they kept the leg on and summoned his parents down from Glasgow.} My father, still on crutches, visited Mr and Mrs Sanders in April 1919, and stayed the night.
