Killed in Dugout

Killed in Dugout

known 17th June 1916

" On the evening of the 16th [June] Le Cateau Trench was blown in, and on 17th the Germans shelled the front line with heavy guns all day. Although the fire was at a slow rate it was accurate and caused several casualties. One of the shells scored a direct hit on the dugout at Post 35, 12/2 CSM W. H. Marsden was sleeping in the dugout at the time and the shell blocked the entrance. Before anyone could react three more shells hit the same spot utterly destroying the dugout. Frantically a rescue attempt was made but to no avail. The would-be rescuers had to expose themselves to get at the remains of the dugout and this attracted a shower of 77mm shells and rifle grenades. Another attempt was made in darkness, but the men failed to get through the twisted and shattered remains of the dugout."
