Novelties at GWVA Meet

The Globe, 14 June, 1919: "Many thousands of the friends and families of the Great War Veterans attended the first of a series of picnics and track meets at Scarboro' Beach Saturday, and to say that they had a 'whale of a time' is about the mildest way in which the outing can be described. There was a great variety of entertainment, not the least of which was the track and field meet. There were novelties on the card never before seen in Toronto, and there were keen competitions among accomplished athletes in the standard athletic events.... One of the novel competitions of the afternoon was an event for legless soldiers in invalid chairs. Three starters went to the mark and propelled their wheel chairs fifty yards, G F Green winning by 'half a chair,' so to speak, from J P Harton [Hoar] with D McInnes third. ..."
