Gas gangrene

Gas gangrene

16th April 1918 - December 1919

John Patrick Hoar's record states that he was wounded in both thighs on April 16, 1918, at Lens. Both legs were amputated at the knee while he was still in France, and when transferred to a hospital in England, re-amputations were performed on both legs because of gas gangrene. He was invalided back to Canada in October, convalescing at the Davisville Military Hospital in Toronto, and by February 1919, he'd been transferred to the Dominion Orthopaedic Hospital, where he would remain until his discharge in December.
