John was the youngest of three known children of Margaret Lewis. He had an elder brother Evan, but their father’s details have not been chased. Prior to this, Margaret was married to David Morgan Lewis and they had a daughter, also named Margaret. In 1891 John was living with his mother and siblings in Tanrallt Street, Machynlleth, and in the 1901 census he was a cattleman working at Gelli Farm, near Talerddig
