Private Arthur George Townsend

ARTHUR GEORGE TOWNSEND was serving as a Rifleman with 1/8th London Regiment, The Rifle Brigade when he was killed in action, during the 100 days offensive, on 31st August 1918 aged 28. He is buried in Hem Farm Cemetery in the Somme Region. He had previously served with The Royal Flying Corps. He was the son of George and Rose Townsend of Albion Street, Chipping Norton. He had previously been working as a hairdresser's assistant for his Uncle in Knutsford, Cheshire. His younger brother Horace won the Distinguished Conduct Medal whilst serving with the 39th Battalion, the Machine Gun Corps in 1918, where he was Company Quartermaster Sergeant.
