Vernon William Nutkins' service records confirm that he was a Flying Officer (Observer), involving him in aerial reconnaissance, including perhaps, aerial photography. He had begun his Royal Flying Corps service with a month long course on "aero observation" held in Reading, Berkshire, starting on 12 March 1917. Vernon would therefore not have been the pilot of the aircraft in which he was killed when it crashed - it seeming reasonable to assume the "flying accident" given as the cause of his death, meant a crash into the ground.
