William's father Rev. John Robert Bartley was Minister of Tralee Presbyterian Church. Aged 63, he died in the sinking by enemy U Boat of the RMS Leinster - Ireland's worst maritime disaster. Rev. Bartley was on the Leinster because he was going to London to see his son William who was there in hospital, having been wounded in action 4 days earlier. William Bartley died of his wounds six days later, and he was interred with his father and sister in Tralee New Cemetery.
