PARCEL FROM HOME

PARCEL FROM HOME

known 17th April 1915

April 17th Wrote to Mother; received 50 Abdulla cigarettes and a letter; route march in the morning. April 18th Sunday Church parade this morning in Square. First man in the battalion killed today. Choral Evensong in the Theatre. Had a big parcel from home, also letters, chocolate, etc. The parcel was unique; it originally contained inter alia, bananas, biscuits, peppermints, but they all got squashed and mixed, the result being quite curious, quite distinctive in flavour and original in appearance. My camera was forwarded. April 19th 12 am Seems to be doubt as to our plans; some say we march into quarantine owing to measles, others that we go to the trenches; orders are to get packed and await developments. “No parleying now. In Britain is one breath; We are all with you now from shore to shore; Ye Men of Kent, ‘tis cictory or death! - Wordsworth
