23rd February 1918
On 23rd Feb 1918, the Grant Fleet returned to Rosyth, Scotland, after forty-eight hours convoying from Bergen to Aberdeen etc. We were a coaling ship, taking in about 2000 tons of provisions etc. We, HMAS Australia, being the Flagship of the Second Battle Cruiser Squadron, received a wireless [communication] asking for volunteers to the numbers of eleven men, for special service. On receiving the message, Seamen and Stokers were asked to volunteer. Soon it was seen al who wished to go could not be accepted, much to their disappointment. Only eleven were chosen.
